When Line and Marco welcomed their third child, they faced a dilemma - should they leave their beloved central neighbourhood in search of a bigger home, or find a way to make their existing flat work? By opting for a loft conversion, they created a bright and spacious living space, allowing them to stay in the heart of the city while gaining the room they needed.
Key Takeaways
  • Maximising space with a loft extension: Expanding upwards is an excellent way to create additional living space, especially when unused attic space is available.
  • Harnessing daylight for a brighter home: Roof windows bring in up to twice as much daylight as vertical facade windows, transforming dark spaces into inviting areas.
  • Enhancing comfort with smart solutions: Electric roof windows and blinds help regulate temperature and improve indoor air quality effortlessly.

Staying or moving: A difficult decision

Today, Line and Marco enjoy the airy, light-filled apartment they envisioned, but their journey to this point was not without challenges.

When their third child arrived, their fourth-floor flat began to feel too small. Moving seemed like the logical choice, but they were reluctant to leave the central Copenhagen neighbourhood they loved. With friends and family living just around the corner and both of their jobs in the city centre, relocating would have meant sacrificing convenience and community. They had also found a peaceful, slow-paced atmosphere in the city that felt just right - something they had imagined only a suburban home could offer.

"When the roof was opened up and the daylight flooded in, I felt shivers down my spine. I still get that sometimes." Marco

A loft extension brings the perfect solution

Fortunately, a unique opportunity arose. The attic space above their flat, long used for storage, became available for purchase. Though it was dark and unused, Line and Marco saw its potential and decided to embark on a loft conversion.

Line recalls: "We originally combined two one-bedroom flats to create a 100-square-metre apartment. By incorporating the attic, we now have 170 square metres of living space, including a roof terrace. We designed an open-plan area with a bedroom and living room that highlights the original architectural details, giving it a timeless appeal."

Bringing daylight to every corner

When Line and Marco decided to extend their flat with an extra storey, they knew from the start that maximising daylight would be key.

Line explains: "We were happy living on the fourth floor, even with the challenge of carrying toddlers and groceries up the stairs. But when we gained access to the fifth floor, we had an incredible opportunity to bring in more light. Since modifying the building's facade wasn't an option, we focused on the roof instead. Our goal was to install as many roof windows as possible. I think we originally applied for permission to install more, but we ended up with 17."

The difference was transformative. Going from a dark, neglected attic to a bright, airy living space was an incredible experience. Marco recalls: "It had always been a dusty storage room, so when the installers started cutting holes in the roof, we were invited to take a look. Seeing the light flood in for the first time was mind-blowing. After ten years of living here, we had never imagined the space could feel this open. Even now, I still get that same feeling sometimes."

Before and after: The dark, unused attic was transformed into a bright and spacious living area through a loft conversion with roof windows.

Choosing the right roof window solution

With 17 roof windows to install, Line and Marco worked closely with architects to select the best combination. They opted for:

Since the loft extension opened up to the full height of the fifth floor, reaching nearly 10 metres at its highest point, electric roof windows were essential. A staircase was also installed to connect the two levels seamlessly.

Easy temperature adjustment

During the planning phase, Line and Marco realised that having so many roof windows could lead to temperature fluctuations in their attic apartment. However, by carefully selecting the right VELUX roof windows, blinds and external heat protection, they achieved a balance between maximising daylight and maintaining a comfortable indoor climate.

Marco explains: "We knew that all this natural light would be fantastic, but we also had to think about temperature control. To prevent overheating, we installed blackout blinds on the inside and anti-heat blinds on the exterior, particularly on the side that gets the evening sun. The anti-heat blinds significantly reduce the amount of heat entering the space, ensuring that the interior remains cool."

Beyond passive shading, the couple also made use of automated ventilation to maintain comfort throughout the day. "We programmed the electric roof windows to open at specific times while we're at work, allowing fresh air to circulate and naturally cool the interior. By the time we get home, the space is well-ventilated and pleasant to be in. It makes a huge difference to our indoor climate."

Enjoying natural light all year round'

Compared to vertical facade windows of the same size, roof windows allow up to twice as much daylight to enter a room, a difference that Marco and Line appreciate daily in their loft extension.

"Bringing in so much natural light has been a game-changer," says Marco. "It makes a huge difference in winter when the days are short and dark. Being on the top floor, we get light from all angles, so even on grey days, the space feels bright."

Line adds: "What I love most is being able to follow the sun throughout the day. Even when it's cloudy, there's always a soft natural light in the room. On sunny days, the shadows shift beautifully across the walls, and during sunrise or sunset, the colours create this warm, golden glow in our home."

New favourite corners for children and adults

Beyond the additional space, the loft extension has created new favourite spots for every family member.

"There's more room for everyone to have their own little space," says Marco. "Our youngest son now has a dedicated play area, rather than having his toys scattered in the living room. Our older children have their own rooms, which has made a huge difference for them."

For Line, a simple but cosy corner has become her go-to spot. "Right in front of our roof terrace, there's a small step where I love to sit with a cushion and read with our toddler. It's the perfect height to sit with him, and it has become our special little reading nook."

A bright and inviting living space

Line and Marco successfully turned their vision into reality, creating a penthouse-style loft filled with daylight. They've also noticed how naturally the space draws in both family and visitors.

"Whenever we have guests over, they're surprised by how open and bright the space feels," says Line. "It's not what people expect from a traditional city apartment."

Marco agrees: "We naturally spend most of our time upstairs. When we come home from work, we head straight up here. In good weather, we eat on the terrace, and in the evenings, we relax in the living room. When friends visit, we always end up gathering here - it's where everyone wants to be."
