VELUX roof windows can create a better and healthier indoor space for generations to come. They are built to last from certified wood. We have decided to reduce our carbon footprint, from how we purchase material and drive our operations, to the products we deliver to our customers. We have set ambitious targets to reduce our carbon footprint and to go beyond our value chain and finance forest projects that capture the equivalent of our entire historical emissions from our operations.

Taking climate action

At a time where the planet is facing a triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, taking bold climate action is crucial.

Climate science shows it is necessary to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, and we commit to reduce our future emissions to meet this targets.

How do we do this?

We are reducing emissions from our own operations by improving energy efficiency and switching to renewable electricity. We are reducing emissions from our value chain by purchasing materials with a lower carbon footprint, for example materials with recycled content.

We are financing forest projects that capture carbon equivalent to our entire historical emissions from our operations by our 100 year anniversary in 2041.

This will be achieved through a 20-year partnership with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) by investing in forest conservation projects that benefit people, nature and climate.

"VELUX is working with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to capture our historical carbon footprint through forest conservation, while dramatically reducing our future emissions at the same time."

Materials make up the largest part of our carbon footprint

The majority of our total carbon footprint relates to the materials we use in our products. To reduce our carbon footprint we have to focus on the materials we purchase.

The materials with the highest impact on our emissions are aluminium, glass, steel and plastic. We are entering partnerships with our suppliers to source materials with a reduced carbon footprint.

Why forest projects with WWF International?

By partnering with WWF to develop new forest projects from scratch, we are taking a unique approach to protect and restore forests in some of the most biodiverse landscapes in the world. Forest conservation is one of the most effective methods to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and help mitigate climate change.

Our twenty-year partnership will deliver a portfolio of forest projects in tropical forest landscapes with high biodiversity value that will create positive change for people, nature and climate. The carbon captured from these forest projects will be donated to the host countries’ climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.

This means that the carbon captured by the forest projects will not be used for off-setting of VELUX carbon emissions or any other organisation’s emissions.
