Cleaning tips
- The glass must not come into contact with silicone.
- Do not use cleaning agents that contain abrasive particles.
- The window must not come into contact with sharp or abrasive objects, including jewelry.
- Never attempt to remove dirt from the window without first rinsing with water.
- If other work is carried out near the window, it must be protected with a clean piece of plastic to avoid splashes or stains from aggressive and abrasive substances.
Maintenance of the wood
During the manufacturing phase, the wood has been given a basic treatment and a final surface treatment, which can be cleaned with common household cleaning agents. The wood must be further treated at least every four years. Windows exposed to extreme heat, strong sunlight and/or high humidity (e.g. in the kitchen or bathroom) must be treated at least every two years.
Cleaning the window
To clean the outer window, simply rotate the frame 180 degrees. You need to lock the frame in this position by pushing the cleaning bolt into the bushing at the bottom of the side frame. This safety feature means that you have both hands free to clean the window. Clean the window with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth/chamois/non-abrasive sponge or a clean, metal-free window scraper.
Clean water is usually sufficient for cleaning the window. Ordinary non-abrasive household cleaners can also be used. Soft water is best for cleaning windows. In areas with hard water, a small amount of detergent is therefore added to soften the water - or you can choose to wipe away any excess water after cleaning. The window must not come into contact with sharp or abrasive objects, including jewelry.
Surface maintenance
Remove the surface treatment (varnish or paint). Make sure the surface is clean and dry and apply primer to the wood. When dry, apply a coat of water-based acrylic varnish or paint (always follow the manufacturer's instructions). Use the same method on the affected areas if the varnish/paint is damaged. VELUX offers a repair kit with original repair varnish or paint. When treating the wood, it is important to cover the gaskets to prevent varnish/paint from getting on them, as this will make the gaskets stiff/hard and thus destroy their function.
Cleaning the air filter
The air filter can be removed and washed with common household cleaning agents. Rotate the window and lock it in the cleaning position. Then remove the filter from the filter holder. You can buy new filters, flap foam and acid-free grease in the VELUX e-shop as part of our DIY service kit.
Cleaning the flashing
Leaves and other debris around the window covering should be removed once a year so that rainwater can pass freely.
Replacement of ventilation filter and flap foam, as well as lubrication of hinges
The VELUX DIY service kit, suitable for both wooden and polyurethane windows, is a great DIY product that can help you extend the life of your window. We recommend that you lubricate hinges and fittings at least once a year.
Snow and ice
Tn areas with prolonged cold periods and heavy snowfall, snow and ice may accumulate on your VELUX roof window over a long period of time. When the temperature rises, the window is often one of the first places where snow and ice begin to melt. It is important to ensure that water can always be directed away from the roof and gutters.
Condensation
If condensation forms on your window panes, it is a sign that you need to ventilate more. Regular ventilation is the most effective method of preventing condensation from forming on the window pane.
Electric skylights
After 10 years, it is recommended to replace both gas springs and motors. This prevents the risk of malfunction and improves performance.
